About Russ

Russ Huxtable for the Sixth District

Russ is a native Delawarean and a graduate of the University of Delaware. Russ began his community service in high school and then continued that service in college, volunteering and working with the home repair ministry, Appalachia Service Project (ASP). As a young man, he thought his life would be focused on creative, fun ways to make money. But ASP changed all that and to this day he is guided by powerful memories of the people he met and served and of the difference volunteering made in their lives. When talking about his volunteer work in Appalachia, and the advice he would give to his volunteers to take what they’d learned back to their own communities, Russ now says, “I am now living my own advice.”

Russ has always been active in athletics growing up. Sports taught him to enjoy competing without rancor and to value teamwork over showmanship. For over ten years, he has taught those values to young people through his coaching with the Henlopen Soccer Club. He still enjoys that camaraderie through his activities with the Lewes Base Ball Club, originally an outreach program of the Lewes Historical Society, he now serves as its Treasurer. More importantly he continues to play games and represent our community by playing first base for the team. Being actively engaged in his community is a core value for Russ. In addition to coaching soccer and base ball, Russ has hosted events around Pumpkins in the Park, a social and awareness event for Lewes in Bloom.

Professionally, Russ is a leader in affordable housing and community development in Delaware and in the coastal community. For the last 18+ years he has worked for a nonprofit that is dedicated to developing affordable housing in Sussex County, and the entire state of Delaware. His organization helps families achieve their American Dream of homeownership, develops and preserves affordable rental opportunities, and provides home repairs to lower income families. He is a nationally recognized leader in affordable housing who is called upon to serve on boards and advisory committees and to speak at local and national housing conferences. He is a past member on the Governors Council on Housing and has recently completed his third term with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh’s Affordable Housing Advisory Council.

Russ and his wife Courtney live in Lewes, Delaware. Their two children attend public school in the Cape Henlopen School District.

For Russ, servant leadership is a deeply held personal ethic. In both his professional and personal life, Russ engages with the needs and interests of his community, striving to improve conditions for all. His activism has taught him the many ways in which local, state and federal governments can provide resources, investments and legal protections to improve life for all in our community, to protect our fragile environment, and to rectify unintended consequences of past policies.

Russ is excited to take the next step in public service as the next District 6 State Senator and to represent our amazing communities.
